Why does ChatGPT recommend my competitor but not my brand?
· 3 min read
Usually for one of three reasons. The engine's crawler cannot read your site, your pages do not directly answer the question being asked, or other trusted sites describe your competitor and not you. Work through them in that order, because each one blocks the next.
First, confirm it is a pattern
AI answers vary between runs, so one answer naming a competitor proves little. Ask 10 buyer questions that leave out your brand name, three times each, and count how often each brand appears. If the competitor shows up in most answers and you show up in almost none, you have a real gap. Our guide to checking AI citations has the method.
Cause 1: the engine cannot read you
- Your robots.txt blocks a search crawler. OpenAI says sites that opt out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers. In our study of 1,069 top sites, 12.3% block at least one of the main AI search crawlers.
- A wildcard rule blocks it by accident. A
User-agent: *group withDisallow: /shuts out every crawler you did not name. - Your CDN or firewall rejects it before robots.txt is read. Bot protection often does this silently.
- Your content needs JavaScript. If a page is blank with JavaScript off, AI crawlers may see nothing. See why AI crawlers can't see your site.
Test: run our free audit for robots.txt, then view the page source of your key pages and search for your main claims. If they are missing from the HTML, fix that first.
Cause 2: your pages do not answer the question
An answer engine needs a passage it can quote. A competitor's page that says "X is invoicing software for freelancers, from $9 a month" beats a homepage that says "Reimagine how you get paid". Engines may also run several related searches for one prompt, which Google calls query fan-out, so pages that answer sub-questions such as pricing, comparisons and use cases get more chances.
- Say what you are and who it is for in the first sentence of your key pages.
- Publish your prices, limits and comparisons in plain text. If the facts only exist on a sales call, the engine cannot use them.
- Answer real buyer questions under headings that match how people ask them. See how to write pages AI answers quote.
- Add specific numbers and sources. In the GEO research, statistics and cited sources raised visibility, while keyword stuffing lowered it.
Cause 3: other sites talk about them, not you
Answers are assembled from the web, so what review sites, comparison articles, directories and forums say matters. Look at the sources the engine cites for your questions. If they are roundups that list your competitor and omit you, that is your gap. The fix is slow and real: get included in the lists buyers read, earn reviews, and keep your name and description consistent everywhere. Google warns that seeking inauthentic mentions is not as helpful as it might seem, so skip paid link schemes.
Quick diagnosis
| What you see | Likely cause | First fix |
|---|---|---|
| You are never cited, even for questions only you can answer | Access | robots.txt, CDN rules and server-rendered HTML |
| You are named for your brand, but never for category questions | On-page answers | Direct answers, prices and comparisons on your key pages |
| Answers cite roundups and review sites that do not list you | Outside reputation | Get into those lists, and earn reviews |
| Answers confuse you with a similarly named product | Entity confusion | One consistent name and description, Organization schema with sameAs links |
Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to start appearing?
Access fixes can work quickly: OpenAI says a robots.txt change can take about 24 hours to affect ChatGPT search. Content and reputation changes take weeks to months, because engines must recrawl you and outside sites must change.
Can I pay to be recommended?
Not in the organic answer. Ads on AI surfaces are a separate channel, and this guide covers organic answers only.
Is there a free report showing my AI citations?
Partly. Google Search Console has a Generative AI performance report, and Bing Webmaster Tools shows citations in Copilot and Bing. Neither covers ChatGPT, so you still need to test prompts.
