AEO vs GEO vs SEO: what each means and whether you need separate strategies

· 3 min read

SEO (search engine optimization) aims to rank in a list of links. AEO (answer engine optimization) aims to be the direct answer, as in an AI Overview. GEO (generative engine optimization) aims to be cited in an AI-generated answer, as in ChatGPT. Most sites need one strategy with a few additions, not three separate programmes.

No standards body defines these terms, and vendors use them differently. Google's guide names both AEO and GEO, then says that optimizing for generative AI search "is optimizing for the search experience, and thus still SEO." Google has a stake in that framing, but its point holds for its own products: AI Overviews and AI Mode draw on its core ranking systems.

What is AEO?

Answer engine optimization means structuring content so a search or AI system can lift it as a direct answer. In practice, that means a heading that matches the question, then a short, complete answer straight below it. See how to write a page AI answers can quote for a worked example.

What is GEO?

Generative engine optimization means improving how much a generated answer draws on your content. The term comes from a 2024 KDD paper by researchers at Princeton, Georgia Tech and the Allen Institute for AI. They found that adding quotations, statistics and cited sources raised visibility, while keyword stuffing lowered it. Our evidence guide covers the numbers and their limits.

What is the same across all three

  • Crawlers must reach the page. If a site is blocked or the content needs JavaScript, nothing else matters. See why AI crawlers can't see your site.
  • The page must be useful. Google says unique, non-commodity content with first-hand experience is what to focus on.
  • The site must be trustworthy, with real authors, dates and sources.

What genuinely differs

  • Crawler rules. AI vendors run separate crawlers for training and search, so you make decisions classic SEO never needed. See which AI crawlers to allow.
  • Sub-questions. AI systems may run several related searches for one prompt, a technique Google calls query fan-out, so a page can matter for questions it was never targeted at.
  • Measurement. No first-party report covers ChatGPT, so you test a fixed set of prompts on a schedule. See how to check AI citations.
  • Success without a click. A person may read your name in an answer and never visit, so traffic alone undercounts your presence.

Why people search all three terms

Demand has split between the names. In one Google Ads data pull dated 16 October 2026, "answer engine optimization" and "generative engine optimization" each had 4,400 US searches in September 2026, while "what is aeo" reached 8,100. These are estimates of Google searches, and they say nothing about what people ask inside AI tools.

What to do

  1. Keep your SEO foundations. They carry over directly to Google's AI features.
  2. Add AI crawler rules on purpose, not by default.
  3. Rewrite your most important pages so each question gets a direct answer, backed by real numbers and sources.
  4. Track 10 to 25 buyer questions across the engines your customers use.

Frequently asked questions

Is GEO replacing SEO?

No. Google says its generative AI features are rooted in its core ranking and quality systems, so SEO foundations still apply there. GEO adds crawler decisions and prompt testing on top. It does not replace ranking work.

Is AEO the same as GEO?

They overlap and are often used interchangeably. AEO usually emphasises direct answers such as AI Overviews, and GEO usually emphasises citations in generated answers such as ChatGPT. The tactics are nearly the same, so do not pay for them twice.

Do I need an AEO or GEO agency?

Not necessarily. Crawler access and page rewrites are often manageable in-house. See what GEO costs for how DIY, a one-time fix and a retainer compare.

Which should a small business do first?

Check that crawlers can reach your site, then rewrite your top five pages to answer buyer questions directly. Those steps help under all three labels.
